At an early hour this morning, I was awakened by the wind.I certainly didn't plan to get up at that hour, so I began to plan my week. Among all the other things I do, I think about specific piano students and the problems or successes they are having. Every day there are students who show me how really smart they are. Many of you are involved in a vast number of interesting activities that I can only imagine. One student has been in Cambodia for several weeks helping in an orphanage. Many opportunities arise each day that give you experiences that broaden your education. When you sit down to concentrate on your musical education, I hope you will realize that it is a privilege you should not ignore. Music can touch your heart and soul like no other activity. In the past two weeks, my blog has mentioned Elvis and Dolly. It amused me when students had never heard of these two people who seemed common to me. I guess that is why I write to you. I want you to experience music and musicians you normally might overlook. I grew up with experiences that might surprise you. I have traveled very little and live vicariously through books and people who do travel. Maybe you can travel along in my musical world occasionally.

Please see that you bring all your assignments and practice them too. Try to amaze me with your abilities this week. If you never answer the blog questions, you need to do it. You might get a converation going with your parents or grandparents about the answers. It might surprise you.

We do have lessons on Monday, January 16th as usual.If you haven't made plans for 2012, it may go by so quickly, you will miss it. It is amazing that it has been three weeks since Christmas. Almost everyone who plans to participate in the Pastorale Festival has one of their songs assigned. A few have both of them. The songs are fun and challenging to learn. The classical selections will be fun because many of the tunes are familiar. Deadlines are very important to me and I try to be sure not to miss anything. I gave you a list of dates at the beginning of the school year, but if you have lost the list, you can check the blog for dates or just email me for a new one. Remember to always bring your assignment book with you to piano. I am not able to remember every single assignment you have in every book, so help me by bringing all your materials. Last week, I enjoyed the comments and answers to the Elvis trivia. Several students are Elvis fans too. This time our trivia is also a well-known musician and singer. Her birthday is January 19. When I listen to truly great musicians, I realize how much they actually practice. I also realize that we all have different opinions about who is a great musician. Since I grew up in the time when a certain musician was heard on the radio, seen in movies, presented in concert, and basically idolized, I know that today is his birthday. He would be 77 years old today. More than anything, he enjoyed performing and having a good time singing and playing with his friends. One quote attributed to him is: ‘Without a song, the day would never end; without a song, a man ain’t got a friend; without a song, the road would never bend - without a song.' Now, that may not be grammically correct, but I believe it too. This musician was nicknamed the "King". I saw him in person here in Lubbock. I wasn't the kind of fan my aunt, Nadine, was or even my cousin, Sherry, however, I admired him for his talent and the way he loved his mother. Some of talked about how horrible his life ended and that is true, but he did so much for the popular music in the 1950's. Have you enjoyed time with your family and friend this Christmas? I seems like the time was too short to do all I had planned. I begin piano on Wednesday, January 4th. With the new year come many activities and deadlines for all of us. I hope you weren't someone who sat by and let the fall pass you by. Many accomplishments made me proud. There was much more practice than usual. Recital on Friday December 16

This day feels alot like Christmas is on the way. We have much to celebrate at this time of year. On Friday, the recital will start at 6:15 p.m. at Redbud Baptist Church, 801 Slide Road. You are encouraged to attend the entire recital, but I have divided the recital with an intermission to allow those who need to leave a chance to do so without interruption. The second part should begin by 7:15. There will be many performers who are excited to play for you. I will send another email to you with more specifications.On Friday, I was pleased to find out that our theory test are here. The grades were good and it showed that much hard work has occurred for students. My little friend Liam that I sent information on is still working to raise money for the next well in Africa. We were much more generous on the first well, but that didn't change the whole area by a long shot. There are still places with bad water or none. Justin and Shelby made Christmas ornaments and sold enough to raise around $100. That is great for anybody, but especially when you are 5 and 7. The Twelve Days of Recital

Just like the song? Not exactly. There are things you need to remember as you prepare for the recital on December 16th.Wardrobe:Skirts and dresses- over the knees, not too tight.Sleeves- not hanging over the keys Necklines- enough said.Jewelry- no clicks and clacks. Shoes- practice performing in your pair (and tie the laces).Hair- no flicks and fluffs, if you play with your hair, pull it back. If your hair is in your face, you can't see the keys or the smiles of your audience. Overall appearance. Dress how you want your music to sound. Audiences listen better when the performers take their appearance seriously. Some of these seem to be addressing girls, but boys should also look their best.Very few students in a recital are the same size, take 10 seconds before you play to adjust:Bench height Bench distance Music stand- up or down, too close too far Getting StartedWait until the audience is quiet Get your fingers on the right keys Decide how fast you want to start During a performance keep moving forward. If your dad takes a wrong turn halfway on his way driving to work, he normally doesn't return home to start the trip again. FinishingKeep seated as long as the piano is producing sound. The Recital is 18 Days Away

I do not like to worry people unnecessarily, but if you do not have a recital piece selected and practiced, you need to panic. The calendar is indicating that we have only 18 more days till the recital. Coming from a long line of clock watchers, "time is ticking away." As we are thinking of upcoming events, I am looking for at least 7 students, one in each grade 1-7, who would like to prepare and study for the World of Music quiz. I am new to this one myself, but think it could be fun and thought we would start with the first 7 grades. Would you like to do that? Also, if you took the theory test, would you like to do the ensemble? Students play a song with a group and then play that song for the TMTA convention in Grapvine in mid-June. Would you like that too? Trivia question of the week worth $2: What Christmas carol published in 1853 has the same tune as another carol, "Gentle Mary Laid Her Babe"? Remember to be Thankful Everyday

Only two days of piano lessons this week due to Thanksgiving vacation. All Monday and Tuesday's students will come as usual. We have had another busy weekend with the theory test on Saturday. 11 students in grades 1-10 took the test. It is very hard to believe that Christmas vacation and recitals are our next event. I have heard from almost everyone as to when they would like to play on December 16th. If you never gave a preference, you will be in the 7:15 recital. The three students that tied in the Amazing Race took the tie breaker test this week. One of the students made a perfect score. If you are still working on the race, don't give up and hopefully you will finish in the next three weeks.This week tell me something you are thankful for. I am thankful for so many things, but one extra special blessing I am grateful for is that a spcial little friend named Liam. Liam has been fighting leukemia and is at St. Jude's in Memphis. This weekend he has received a good report. Every day we need to be grateful for those around us and tell them so.

Hymn Festival--theory test--Amazing Race

This weekend has made me very aware of why I teach piano. There are so many really good students and families that are part of the music world. This afternoon several of the level 5-8 students were able to play at the recital at Oakwood Baptist. As I sat and listened to my students and the other students, I realized that there are many talented young people all around us. They are involved in many activities and have found that music is a necessary part of what makes them happy. There were 202 students who participated and 21 teachers. All of my 28 participants did an amazing job and behaved in such a respectful manner. You should be so proud. One of the judges for the festival wrote a scripture at the bottom of every rating sheet she gave. That was appreciated too.Next Saturday there will be a group taking the Whitlock theory test. I will expect Ashley, Connor, Jonathan, Pierce, Madeline, Karli, Kaci, Kanan, Kenzi, Hannah, Charis, Kaitlyn, and Grant. If I have left any one out, it was just an accident. I expect you to come to First Baptist next Saturday morning.We have had 3 terrific racers complete the Amazing Race: Grant, Madeline, and Pierce. The week following the theory test, they will take a tie-breaking test to determine the ultimate winner. All the rest of the students who finish the race before Christmas vacation will receive some sort of award too. What a fun race and we really saw a change in the level of learning. Never quit trying to do your best. It shows in so many ways. I appreciate students who come with a smile and a great attitude. Sometimes we have weeks that the load at school and home is heavy and practice is slim to none, but every little bit is noticed.

Hymn Festival schedule and More

My Goodness! It will really be dark when piano lessons are finished now that daylight savings time "fell back". I will try to remember to turn the light on early this week. The Hymn Festival will be Saturday at Oakwood Baptist Church from 10:25-12:15. If you are involved, please be there at the time you are scheduled and stay prepared for a great performance. Then next weekend is the Whitlock theory Fall test. Be sure to get your time to be there for the test. Our recital is December 16th. Look for an email this week regarding the recital.Some of you have mentioned that you want to take the theory test in February and participate in the Sonatina Festival in February too. In order to do that, you must be Student Affiliate members by November 20th. The fee is now $10. Please let me know your intentions this week.I have a really strong feeling that the winner of the Amazing Race will be announced in the next week. There is very likely going to be a tie and the contestants will have a tie breaker to end the race. Remember that every participant has really been a winner. Whether you have the final prize or not, you are able to show how much you have improved and how much you have learned. Finishing by Christmas is a huge accomplishment.No question for trivia this week.

I guess I will make today's comments quickly, in order to get to the Fall Festival at church this afternoon. The All Boy's Recital was fun and Jonathan did well. It is nice to see that so many families support their students in all sorts of weekend events. Thanks everybody.

The Amazing Race will likely have a winner this week. At least 3 are closing in on the finish line. Even if you are not the winner, don't quit. All students who complete the race before the Christmas recital will receive some award, in addition to a huge improvement in their music accomplishments. I am very very proud of the hard work that has been done.
If you don't know about it, read the blog regularly.
As of today, the leaders are Pierce, Madeline and Grant, followed closely by another group of racers. I feel that the trip back to Texas will be a rocky road.

The Last week in October Is here

October has been a long month, with five Fridays and five Saturdays. That is okay, since the contest season is beginning now. Next Saturday will be the all boys recital at Jents at 10:30. Jonathan will be playing. Hymn Festival contestants are sounding wonderful and working hard. I will pass out the practice theory tests starting this week too.

The Amazing Race has two in 1st place: Madeline and Pierce are both in Antarctica. Other results are: 2nd-Grant 3rd-Ryan B. 4th-Bryson and Kaleigh. The best thing about this competition has been the hard work. On one leg, students have to create a game for music. Kaleigh and Madeline have gone above and beyond the call. Their games are "amazing".

Trivia question: The composer who was nicknamed "the Waltz King" has a birthday on Tuesday. Who was he and what were 2 of his very famous compositions? ($2)

As the weekend came closer, I realized all the plansI had heard during the week. Some went to tournaments. Some to visit friends and relatives. A few went to the State Fair. Some had parties to attend. I even spent the weekend with my whole family in Ruidoso. There were 14 of us, including my mother. We had a funfilled weekend and ate way too much.

Are you ever afraid you are missing something?

Sometimes events just pass by and I never know it, but usually I try to be aware. Piano lessons are usually pretty exciting to me, otherwise, I wouldn't be here. Some students come to my door and look like they can hardly wait to show what they know. Others look like they are afraid that I am smart enough to realize that their piano has been lonely all week. Which are you?
The Amazing Race has added a new dimension to piano this fall. I am glad that it makes you work hard and find out things you didn't know. There are 9 active participants now, working hard for the big prize. Grant is on Leg 5, northern Arfica. Last week, Ryan B. and Madeline bothtook 2nd place in Leg 4. Parents are supportive and helping out and there are a few grandparents helping too. It is fun for everybody.

Trivia question this week: Where do you go to see if there is a record of a word being correct, in other words, definitive usage of a word?

Information and updates for October 1st

I can certainly tell that fall is in the air. Students are working on the theory test, the hymn festival and the amazing race. If you aren't doing any of these, ask yourself why not. Grant is still in the lead and is currently in Leg 4, Africa. That smile that he bring to piano shows me that he is loving this competition. whether you have done anything or not, you are missing the most important thing of all----Learning.

Theory fees were sent Friday and next is the Hymn festival deadline, October 18th. I personally love this event because I get to hear great performances from students who are learning hymns with great messages. Don't sit and let the events from your music classes pass you by. Get involved. Don't let me have all the fun.

Grant Takes the lead in the Amazing Race

Grant arrived in Asia this week on the second leg of the
Amazing Race. Bryson, Kaleigh, Pierce, and Madeline are all in Canada. It has been fun to watch the excitement with this activity and see how hard students are their families are working. In school they say that we need more parent involvement and I think that is true for piano lessons too. I am very proud of all the hard work and can't wait to see who comes to the challenge this week. Remember all it takes is hard work and a support group from home.
The entries are due Friday for theory and hymn festival, so I need to know your plans and if you will participate.

Learning is not Easy

I belong to a group that shares ideas about learning music. I am going to share with you some of what was posted recently. I hope you will think about it.These are thoughts from wise individuals:
"I see that success in learning music -- and I believe, by extension, in learning anything -- has to do with character. Not character as in following the golden rule and standing up to bullies, but character as in an attitude of approaching and dealing with the world and its challenges. Character as in taking responsibility for your learning. Character as is showing up for your life -- prepared, eager, willing, interested, alert, energetic, engaged.

Interestingly, this is most evident with smart students -- the ones for whom everything in school comes easily. According to the article, these students can be among the most resistant to tackling projects that actually require real work. In so many cases, bright students are underchallenged in school and never really have to deal with the mammoth difficulties that, say, a math-challenged student faces every day when looking at an algebra problem. Even in gifted program where bright kid are challenged, the steps for figuring out the problem come easily enough; the problem is usually solved without the head-banging frustration of just not "getting it."

Music challenges the brilliant student just as easily as it challenges everyone else. Becoming a musician is an infinite process, and none of us ever stop learning, ever stop making mistakes. There is no "being done with it." There is always someone better; there is always a harder piece; there is always something you can't do. The "problem" is never entirely solved, because as soon as we learn to play one Beethoven Sonata, we discover another, harder one, we want to play. The audience likes a flashy showpiece by a technically sloppy performer better than our note-perfect but less appealing offering.
The choices we make are not talent questions; they are character questions.

We are used to hearing about the benefits of music education: Serious music students score better on standardized tests, do better in college, have fewer problems with drugs and alcohol. MRIs have shown that musician's brains function differently in terms of neural pathways than non-musician's brains.
But we don't have to look inside a music student's brain to find the answer: It may be as simple as the issue of character -- of getting up when you're down, being honest about your mistakes, dealing with frustration, trying one more time, breaking a problem down and patiently putting the pieces together one at a time."

There is a lot more to this article than I shared. I am glad that some of you have a great deal of character. I have students who do not give all they can to their work and then there are those who make me happy with their quick wit and sweet smiles. The Amazing Race is almost an "amazing crawl" right now. I want action. Okay?

A few words to think about

It is hard to believe that many of you were not even born on 9-11-01. Today, much has changed in our world since that date. I hope you took time to think about that today.

Tomorrow I will send the Student Affiliate membership fees for those who will participate. The Amazing Race has started and several will make it to Canada during this week. Will you collect that extra $20 for you work?
I hope you enjoy all the activities that are planned. You can only benefit from the work if you participate. It is a little like going to the dinner table. Much may have been prepared for you, but if you have your mouth shut and hands tied, you can't eat the food.

Practicing is a lonely job, but very much worth the effort. I truly enjoy every bit progress you make and I will tell you so.

Off and Running

I appreciate all of you as you prepare for this piano year. I heard some pretty terrific goals that you have for your practice, and I hope that together we can accomplish them. Several names have been added to the board as contestant in the Amazing Race. Madeline's mom has designed a very good document that you may use on your race to help you see your destination points and check them off as you go. I appreciate her for her hard work. If you haven't decided to do it, please reconsider because this is a really exciting opportunity. There are some students who always take chances and strive to do that little extra to make their education better.

Last summer, one of the people to complete the Treasure Hunt was Ashley. She collected that extra $50 last week. I know there are many activities that you have to choose from. Piano playing is a gift you can enjoy and share for a lifetime.

Amazing year with the Amazing Piano Race

Today is the end of the second day of school for most of you. I know you have had exciting, scary, fun, tiring, sad, happy,and most of all, busy days. I am preparing for you to come to piano lesson next week too. My piano has been tuned, music purchased, and schedules are being completed. As usual, I try to come up with a fun practice incentive that you might enjoy. This year, we will do the "Amazing Race". We will complete different legs of the race and each leg will have a winner until we get to the end and the BIG winner will be announced.
During the summer, several participated in the activity and some will collect their $50 in music money next week. I will post the names soon.
I will give you an idea about the race so you can decide your strategy. I was a sixth grade teacher for a long time and geography is one of my favorite things. You will have more than you can imagine. Look below for the part that gives the rules and print it off.

You can work on up to two legs at the same time. Needed information will be provided on some of the steps when you get to them.

When each leg is completed you will move to that area. First to complete the leg will receive $20 extra music dollars. Winner of the entire race will receive an exciting prize!

Penalties will occur for not practicing.

Start out in Texas

Leg 1 – North America (Canada)
Step 1 – Practice 5 days a week – at least 15 minutes each day
Complete theory assignment correctly.
Do 2 Web site games successfully

Step 2 – Based on level:
- Learn 2 new Pentascales
- Learn 2 new Scales – both hands together

Step 3 – Make a list of 20 words that can be built with the music alphabet. Then write them on staff
paper.

Most of you have your piano lesson time scheduled for the next few months, however if you haven't found your time, call me. There have been many students working hard over the summer and getting ahead in their lessons. We have been making plans for the next few months. I have received 3 composer reports so far, and I am hoping that we all know a little more music history. Fall lessons begin on August 29, 2011. I hope your summer has not been too hot for you.

Spring fever and Fleeting practice

I hope each one of you had a wonderful Easter weekend. Spending time worshiping with your family and having time for fun is the best way to spend a weekend.
Recently, I sent out the summer information letter and several have been returned. Thank you for promptly taking care of it.
Don't forget the recital is May 20th at Redbud Baptist Church. A group of students will be going to the Greater Southwest Music Festival in Amarillo on May 6th.
On April 30th, please come out to the Science Spectrum sometime between 10-3. There will be a booth advertising the Lubbock Music Camp that my daughter and I will conduct during the summer. Even if you plan to be out of town for much of the summer, this would be a way that you could enjoy something fun and new. We are going to learn to play hand chimes. Anyone can learn and that is fun. Pastorale and Theory results

Here are the scores given for Pastorale March 11-12: Robert, Jonathan, Connor, Katie, Bryson, Dawson, Josh, Patricia, Brynna, and Karli received excellent ratings. Pauline, Kenna, Kanan, Fath, Daniella, Charis, Nathan, Kayelin, Madeline, Kaci, Kaleb, Pierce, Mallory, James, Kaitlynn, Rachael, Ashley, Ryan, Kaleigh, Tara, Sharayah, and Deidra received superior ratings. All of those taking the theory test earned medals: Daniel, David, Rachael, Kaci, Karli, Kanan, Jake, and Bryson. The highest two scores came from Daniel and Kanan. Good work for all of you.
Last week, we started making plans for the May recital and some are going to another festival in Amarillo on May 6th.
Opportunity for bonus money: Change the words to Twinkle, Twinkle Little star so that the song is about Spring. I can give up to $7 depending on who is best. Winner and words will be posted next week.

Today was te first day of Spring. I am glad to start back to lessons tomorrow and I hope you are. I am proud of all the successes at Pastorale. I don't suppose anyone can say they love a sandstorm. I am afraid that if it doesn't rain soon, we will have a very bad spring. I have lived in this area my whole life and I have seen some awful sandstorms. That makes us appreciate the pretty weather we have most of the time. Since the weather is yucky, you can make use of today by practicing extra hard.
Pastorale participants have 11 more days until contest. At least you have one or more songs memorized by now. If you don't, then you are going to need an hour practice per day, maybe more. Noone wants to be unprepared. Some of you have difficult songs to put to memory. The rest of you will begin to work on recital music very soon.
We have not received the grades for the theory tests yet. I will let you know when they are here.

The Joys of Being a Piano Teacher

Kaleigh and Kenna have a challenge to those in level 2 of the music learning community. Both girls earned perfect scores in the Challenge part of Jingle notes last week. That is 4000 points. Can you do it too?

I do have much to be grateful. I wish all parents could sit behind a screen and listen to the songs their chidren play. Some of you come to lessons, and others I never see. Most of you would be pleased with the attitudes your children display at their lessons. They are willing to make corrections and work to sound much better than when they arrive. Piano is a solo instrument and it is difficult to work alone if you have no encouragement. When you listen to your child, remember that even Bach lived in the shadow of his older brother and wanted acceptance so much that he copied his brother, Chriostoph. Later, Bach got so upset with one of his students that he pulled a sword on him because he refused to make corrections. Interesting that I would bring that up, huh?

Trivia this week: Bach and Handel were both Baroque composers and had something else in common. What was it? ($2) Give an extra thorough answer and get a bonus.

Sonatina Festival Results and More

This weekend was very busy again. The following students received superior ratings at the Sonatina festival at Texas Tech: Bryson, Dawson, Jonathan,and Sharayah. Hunter received a superior plus rating. On February 19th, Karli and Kaci will tryout for the ensemble group that performs at the State TMTA convention in Arlington. All the rest of you are working hard at various endeavors. Congratulations to Kenna for her second place spelling bee accomplishments. That was great. Also, Jonathan placed second in UIL number sense. Keep me informed so we can celebrate with you.

What will the Weather do this Week?

As I write this afternoon, it is cold and snowing, wet and cloudy. Last week was not fun for me because of so many changes. Many of you lost your water and had to do without. You had late classes or no classes at school. My sidewalk was covered in ice and my outside dogs wore strange clothing. I never planned to live in temperatures this cold and I am ready for Spring. That crazy groundhog saw his shadow and that wasn't good news either. We had the theory test this weekend and the sonatina group will be next Saturday. If you are signed up for that event, we will be in Rm 248 of the Texas Tech Music Building at 11:20 a.m. Don't forget to bring your music when you come.
Karli and Kaci will have ensemble tryouts at Jents on Saturday, Feb 19. I will tell times at lessons.

So Much to Do and so Little Time

January always seems to be too long, but after January is over, the pace picks up till we sail right through to June. This Friday, Saturday, and Sunday will involve several students in the Whitlock theory test. Charis, Pierce, Kaleb,and Kenzi on Friday. Bryson, Jake, Kaci, Karli, and Kanan will take it on Saturday, and David, Daniel, and Rachael will finish it off on Sunday. The following weekend will be Sonatina Festival for Dawson, Bryson, Hunter, Sharayah, and Jonathan. Then almost all of you will be doing the Pastorale festival on March 12th. If you are doing nothing,I am sorry that you aren't getting the excitement I feel. Maybe you will have it later in your musical journey.

Cold Weather-Warm Music

What did you think of the cold weather last week? All that cold and we had no snow. It did make me think about all that indoor time that could be used for practicing piano. It might surprise you to know that I can lose myself playing through a pile of music that I enjoy. I love playing folk songs and songs that make me remember special people and special times. Josh groban is one of my favorite singers and I enjoy his music. I also really like Irving Berlin. Music can make me feel happy, sad, and everything in between. Music just makes me feel. When you play a song, or listen to one, do you wonder why it was written? When you have little children around you, it is easy to make up songs about everything that is done: picking up toys, going to sleep, eating, etc. I make up many songs about food because I have an interest in it. What songs do you enjoy the most?

New Year's Resolutions and Accomplishments

I loved seeing all of you last week and beginning new music for the semester. I started off on Monday rather slowly, but by the end of the week, I was assigning music, passing songs, and getting ready for the theory test. If you are not working on at least one of the music activities, you must be a beginner. We have the theory test, sonatina festival, Pastorale, Wee folk Recital, Jazz, Pop, and Rock recital to do by March 12th. That makes me tired just thinking about it.
Remember you do not have to practice piano every day, just practice on the days that you eat! ( You are either going to sound terrific or be very skinny.)
Trivia question worth $3: The Vienna boys choir is divided into four singing groups named after four composers. Name three of the composers. For an extra $1, tell me how old this choir is.

Too Many Activities and Too Little Time

I hope this Wednesday, December 29th, finds you happy and enjoying your Christmas holidays. I have not written since the recital. I wanted all of you to know that the total collected for the Practice-a-thon was $1,131.30. I am so very proud of each one of you that participated. That amount of money will certainly help many families who are needy in our community.

On Monday, January 3, 2011, piano lessons will resume as usual. We will start working on Pastorale, Sonatina Festival, theory tests, and the Jazz, Pop, and Rock recitals. There will be no time for deciding what to do because we are going to have to hurry to accomplish it all.

Our practice incentive will be music money again. Rules may change a little. Always do what is in your assignment books and you will be okay.I am very far from being a technology guru, but I will try harder this year to make you want to read the blog.

Practice-a thon begins tomorrow

I hope all of you had a nice Thanksgiving and have your track shoes on for the next few weeks. Tomorrow is the first day for our Practice-a -thon. If you do not know anything about it, refer to last week's blog. Some people have been supportive and of course the whole idea is to remember to give to those who are less fortunate than we are, even if it is a small donation. I have had a few offer to give a donation instead of collecting from friends and I think that is fine.
Our recital will be on December 17th at 6:30 p.m. If you have a conflict, I need to know this week. The Hymn festival went extremely well. Participants were well prepared and I was very proud of the outcome. The Level 8 participants played in the Sunday recital at Oakwood Baptist Church.

This week's trivia: What was the first Christmas carol and who sung it?
This is worth 2 beads for both parts.

Practice-a-thon

At Christmas time it’s easy to get caught up in all of the many activities that we all have to do. We should remember there are lots of people that are less fortunate than we are. This year, in an effort to help others, we’re going to do a Practice-a-thon. It’ll serve a multiple benefit …. Not only will extra practicing make for a better student, but we can help others at the same time.

All the money collected will go to purchase food baskets for needy families at Christmas. A local church men’s group purchases food baskets each year and delivers them to the families.

The Pratice-a-thon will run from November 29 to December 10. All money will be due by December 17 (the day of our recital)

Start thinking about your goal of how many hours you can practice during these 12 days. Could you practice 12 hours in 12 days? If your goal is reached, you will earn a gold bead.

Money will be collected from your sponsors based on the goal of hours that you have set to practice. A form will be given to you to start collecting your sponsors this week.

Here is an example of what you could say to encourage others to help in this important cause:

Hi my name is ________________. I am a piano student at Linda King's Music Studio. I am competing in a Practice-a-thon from November 29 to December 10.
Would you be willing to sponsor me for my practice? For example, agree to pay $1 for each hour I practice piano and all the money I collect will go to the purchase of food baskets for needy families at Christmas. Only 47 days Until Christmas Recital

Don't you just love deadlines? I don't either, but I do like to look back on successful events. Last Saturday, the All Boys Recital was held and all the boys did great. I even had one show up to play that wasn't registered. That is dedication! Great job, Bryson, Kaleb, Kanan, and Jonathan.
This Saturday, Nov. 6th, several will take the Whitlock theory test at First Baptist Church. The work to do this is not overlooked by me. You all are doing great and more will do this event in February. Don't give up. The finish line is right in front of you.
Yesterday afternoon, I helped with scheduling the Hymn Festival on November 20th at Oakwood Baptist. I will be able to tell you your time soon. If you have special time issues, I must know immediately.

Students ready? Piano Tuned? Practiced?

Back in the days when my children were in school, we were involved in BMX racing. My husband was very involved in keeping bicycles running smoothly and I kept us fed and on schedule for a weekend crammed full of racing in many places. We attended races in Lubbock, Midland/Odessa, Plainview, Tulia, and Amarillo for the most part, but took several out-of-state trips to national events. What has that got to do with piano? Every race started with "Riders ready? Pedals set? Watch the light!" If you are a dedicated musician, you also need to be ready, tuned up, and ready to move or the gate may drop on you too.
Saturday, some will be involved in the All Boys Recital at Jent's at 10:30. The Whitlock theory test is November 6th at First Baptist Church, The Hymn Festival is November 20th at Oakwood Baptist Church. If you are the kind of musician you should be, you are involved in as many events as you can be. If you have nothing to strive for, you need to get busy. Life is passing you by and you are missing terrific opportunities. Someday you can look back on your piano lessons and say that you put your whole heart into your job. Job? Oh yes, it is work! You can simply sit like a rock or you can spin like a windmill. Many of you are now seeing the joy or learning and I hear laughter as you learn and succeed. Good for you!

Exciting times with Fall in the Air

My two favorite times of the year are Spring and Fall. If you have noticed all the cotton coming out of the fields and the pumpkins for sale, you know it is fall. We also have fall festivals everywhere. Why do we like to be scared at a haunted house? I believe it is because we like strong feelings.Even if something has a negative part to it, it can be overridden by our preference to feel something as opposed to feeling nothing. This may be the same phenomenon that drives our curiosity,our restlessness, or boredom. We love the experience of a building up of tension and relief. The best part of all about being scared on Halloween or in a scary movie is the huge relief at the end when we or our hero emerges safe and sound. We like to work through situations and make them come out better.
For better or for worse, humans are like to be problem solvers and when things didn’t go well in the past, we like to replay the situation and have it come out differently. We all recall the experience of being scared when it didn’t feel so good, but we go right back and do whatever it is again. Is that why I like piano contests? Maybe. I like the thrill of victory and working through problems to make things successful.

The All Boys Recital is next Saturday. Four of my boys are entered. Then the next event is the theory test on November 6th. Believe me, I have more tension preparing for theory than going to a scary movie. I hope my heroes come out victorious that day.
The students with the most incentive beads are Elizabeth and Rachael, both with 13. Elizabeth has a gold bead too. Most students have 7-9: some as few as 4. Work for every opportunity.

What happened to you last week?

I am afraid that is what some of you might say to me at your lessons. I have been very busy trying to stay up with all that I have to do. Saturday I was registered for an important meeting and thought of it today. That is not like me at all. Most of us are stressed and over-scheduled. What do you do to keep yourself motivated and on schedule? I keep lists and mark off my tasks. (yes, the meeting was on my paper. I do not know what happened) Even when you do small practice times, it is better than none at all.
The theory test is looming over us and we will conquer it successfully. The All Boys Recital is also coming up. The best part of the week is hearing all the hymns you all are learning. Try to stay focused. We have so much to do and can't forget to work hard. Sorry, no trivia question this week. Smile for me and make my day.

Big Important News for Theory Test Takers!!!

All of you that are studying and preparing for the Whitlock theory test listen up! Friday I learned that we will have our ear training on a CD. There will be no live person to repeat the information. Registration was Friday and 12 of you are registered. We have to get busy and prepare for the twenty-first century way of doing this. I am sure many questions will be answered in the next month. The test is November 6th. Another test will come in February.
All of my piano students study theory because I believe that you should understand how music works.Based on your level of learning, list 10 things you have learned in piano theory. Some of your will need to impress me with your knowledge. I will add beads for a good list of 10. I may ask questions. This needs to be a kid-generated list.

We have all been involved in learning for several weeks now. I am so proud of the way you have taken your new assignment books to record your practice times. Most of you are keeping up with your theory on the computer and practicing more. My family thinks it is strange that I make lists of jobs I have to complete each week, but without a real plan, I could never ever accomplish all I have to do. No, I do not go to school and have homework like most of you, but I do have a certain amount of tasks to keep up with.

I would clean my room, but who cares? I would practice that song two more times, but who cares? Those are actually statements I have made. It is hard to do what I should do just because I should. It is great to have someone say, "Good Job" or Well Done", otherwise, we think noone cares whether we do it or not. Believe me, last week, some of you made me so happy. You had done your assignments so well. You came with good attitudes, a smile, and we both enjoyed the time together. At the end of the day, think back on all the things that matter to you. Did you do your best or did you just do a job without care?

This morning, our youth pastor spoke on "hope". Sometimes we get our hopes scattered if we make unrealistic expectations. Are you making plans for piano learning this year or are you flying by the seat of your pants with no goal insight? I start every week with a list. It gives me great pleasure to know I have accomplished what I set out to do.
As my policy stated: Practice must be scheduled at a regular time each day and become part of each student’s daily routine. Morning time is the very best for quality practice time. After school will be a bit less productive for piano practice, and after dinner is just frustrating for students and parents. The most productive practice session of the week is the one directly after a student’s lesson when my instructions are still fresh on your child’s mind. As a general statement, I believe parents should sit with the student during daily piano practice until there is no difference in outcome with or without the parent present.
Practice is not always easy, but it is worth it.
I enjoyed meeting all of you last week with your wide eyes and hopes for this year. Your excitement is contagious. Even if I have 20 excited students, one grouch can effect my day. I want you to love piano. I think our new way of showing our accomplishments with collecting beads will be a visual way of comparing our learning to others. Work hard and let's see great things.

Summer Piano Baseball Results

Over the summer, several students drew names in order to be placed on a baseball team.The whole idea was to encourage more practice during the summer months and create some competition. Certain rules had to be followed in order to get to the bases and eventually score points. The teams were called Team Forte and the Ledger Lions. For quite a while Team Forte led by a good number of points, then the Ledger Lions began to pick up momentum. By the end on our summer session on August 12, the score was tied 21-21. Amazing!! Ultimately the coach, me, had to decide the winning group who is invited for an ice cream party. The winners are: Madeline, Elizabeth. Robert, Daniella, Kaitlynn, Pauline, Brynna, Deidra, Tara, and Jonathan. Most valuable player is Elizabeth.
Now if you know you were on the team and your name is not listed above, start practicing now. Earning money for practice will start for many of you on the first day of lessons. Competition is good for you and so is application of good practice habits.

I apologize for being a day late with this blog, but I enjoyed Mother's Day yesterday. I hope all students made every effort to be nice to their mothers, especially this weekend.
We have 2 more weeks of lessons this semester. Last Friday, thirteen students and their families traveled to Amarillo College for the Greater Southwest Music Festival.
Andrew, Rachael, Daniel, and Karli received outstanding ratings. That was terrific! Ben, Jake, Kaleb, Kaci, Kanan, Kenzi, Davey, Kayelin, and Tara all received superior ratings. Each person can be proud of their accomplishments. I appreciate the hard work. Maybe next year a few others can go too.
I have had 17 letters returned for summer and fall lesson times. Please get yours turned in quickly so we can know what schedule we can have.

By the way, if you are not a Lubbock resident and you get a weather report from my blog, today is extremely windy and sandy. Tomorrow is the anniversary of the May 11th tornado in Lubbock for 1970. Do any of you have a story to tell about that? I sure do. You can earn extra money this week if you happen to know what day of the week and time the tornado struck Lubbock. I know what T.V. program was on, so I will never forget it. Weather is always interesting in Lubbock, Texas.

Favorites

Have you ever made a list of all your favorite things? Favorite color, food,place to visit, people,movie, things to do in your spare time, book to read, song? Since I just have a birthday, I have thought about some of my favorite things. My favorite place to visit, so far, is Stone Mountain, Georgia. I have been there two times and both were great. We all went camping. My whole family was there and the hiking and playing made the best memories. We saw a laser show on the side of the mountain and listened to music being played. There isn't a time that I hear those songs that it doesn't take me to a special time and place I loved to be. Music has a strong affect on me. I love to hear songs and singers of many types. My favorite songs change almost from day to day. My favorite hymn is "Sweet Beulah Land".
This week in order to earn $2 extra dollars you must do something for me. I want you to sing or play a favorite song you have. If you can't sing it, bring the words and we'll try it together.
Music is one of my favorite things and I hope it is one of yours too.

The Wet Wet World in Lubbock, Texas

I wonder how many of you are practicing more this weekend. It is a sure thing that you don't have many outside activities to do. Rain is the subject of many musical compositions, so everyone goes through this. I like it, up to a point, but my raingauge has collected more than 8 inches in the past few days. My garden and grass and (weeds) will love it.

Last week, several people who never answered the blog questions decided to try it out. I hope you will too.
This week is the deadline for Greater Southwest Music Festival. So far, there are 13 of you signed up to go on Friday, May 7th. I think it will be fun to see how you do there.
I noticed that there are many playing songs right now about Spring: Elizabeth,Kenzi, Katelynn. Just to name a few. A composer named______________wrote a song called Spring Song in what year? (2 answers) Before that Vivaldi wrote "The Four Seasons". Supposedly, he wrote 4 sonnets and then wrote the music to go with them. What is a sonnet? (1 answer) Those 3 are worth $2. Spring into Action with Goals and Trivia

Every year at this time there are students who get lazy after Pastorale or after spring break. DON'T DO IT!!! Can you imagine how much time you might be wasting?
Always look toward your next goal. Maybe your goal is playing perfectly in th May 21st recital. Maybe you are also going to Amarillo to play at the Greater southwest festival in May. (are you interested in this?)Whatever your goal, always look to do your best.

Last Wednesday, my newest grandchild was born. Her name is Macey Faith. Thanks to all of you who sacrificed piano time for me last week. I will try not to interrupt your schedules again. It was worth it to me. She is a precious addition to our family.

Pastorale and Theory results

I hope that each one of you had a good spring break. It started off busy for me and stayed busy. On March 13th, 281 students participated in the Texas Tech Pastorale Festival. The following students received superior ratings: Connor, Jonathan, Bryson, Dawson, Pauline, A. J., Teressa, Addie,Daniella,Tymber, Kenna, Faith,Kaci, Karli, Kenzi, Kanan, Graham,Sharayah,Ryan, Kaleigh,Tara and Savanah. That was great.
Then I received the theory tests back on Wednesday. If I have not contacted you, give me a call and I will tell your grade.
If you happen to be one of the students who missed out on one of the activities we have had, I am sorry. You are missing a golden opportunity. I enjoy seeing the smiles of students who work very hard and get rewards for hard work.

I am glad it is Spring. Now, watch out for more trivia questions on this blog. Don't forget that our recital is May 21st.

Problems with Practicing?

Is practice just playing a piece over and over again? Mindless repetition is tiresome and with that you will surely get very little results. If your music doesn't sound musical, it is time to work on a few things. Learning to play an instrument well takes time. Even if you are very young, you can pracice 30 minutes a day, even if your spread it out over 2 sessions. If you skip days of practice, you won't see much results. We all need routine. Children want to please their parents. Praising their day-to-day progress is the single most important thing to be done. Children like to be the boss. Try asking them questions about their music rather than giving directions. Let them discover a few things as independently as possible.

Practicing is lonely and mistakes do happen. Listen for reasons to be positive. You may not have a little Mozart, but you can find reasons to praise your child. Brag on the little things, like sitting up straight an keeping a good hand position. You might be amazed what it will do for them and you too.

Practicing piano is similar to Olympic training

Have you been watching the Olympics? The athletes are amazing and make their particular event seem so effortless. My favorite is the ice skating, especially ice dancing. None of the truly great winners succeed accidentally. They all practice and practice to achieve what is expected.
Piano performance is like that too. No one performs well without training and preparation. Many of you are perparing for Pastorale on March 13th. I hope you know that you are going in order to receive the judge's comments and views on your playing. Everyone wants to receive a superior rating, but how hard does everyone work? We all need goals to reach and it is amazing the confidence that you can gain by working and achieving the goal you set in front of yourself.
Have you noticed the family members who support the athletes? Musicians need family support too. All of us enjoy a little praise. It is nice to see your parents really watch and listen to you play without the distraction of a televison or a cell phone.

It is Friday evening, 11:30 p.m. I have put in a long day. I am entering all the information for Pastorale on a long master summary sheet. All the teachers in volved are there and eventually, all the 280 entries wll be there. It is a time consuming and tedious job. When you go to perform on March 13th, I hope you appreciate the long hours that were spent in preparing for you. Sometimes, we think that it just miraculaously happens. That is not true.

Tomorrow, Kenna and Jake play in the Sonatina Festival. I hope they do well. Both sounded good this week.
If you are not participating in any event, what is wrong? You are missing out on the learning and not taking advantage of what is offered. Don't be a "dud". Did you practice today? I went to the piano several times to play Tyler's song and Tymber's.
I hope you are keeping an active mind. Music will do that for you.

What is not to like about February? The last theory test happens on February 6th. the participants are: Jonathan, Kaleb, Kanan, Davey, Daniel, Rachael and Ben. Good luck to all of you. don't forget to study hard this week.
Feb. 13th will be the sonatina festival. Kenna and Jake will represent my group.
Feb 14 is Valentine's Day. I don't really have a sweetie, but I consider my grandchildren, Tymber, Kysti, Justin, Shelby, Brooks, and Torin to be the sweetest little treats in my life.
Pastorale entries have been officially entered. Continue to work hard.

Please remember our special friend Savanah (the cute little red-haired girl at the recital). Savanah and her family lost their home on Saturday morning to a fire. Please pray for them as they try to cope with this loss. I am glad they are safe.

The Last Week of January

January always seems like a very long month to me, probably because we have just had two months with holidays. The days sometimes seem cold and dark in January. When I have excited students come to piano lessons, it helps get through those cold days. Last week was an example of why I teach piano, I had two students come to piano that were so excited and well-prepared I had to pinch myself to see if I was awake. I LOVE days like that. In fact, when someone comes who has worked hard and is happy, it makes my day seem shorter and happy too. Please work hard. When you are prepared, you know it is fun and the time flies by so quickly. I am proud of your accomplishments and sad when you waste the opportunity you have been given. I wish all parents could see what I see and hear each week. Wow! I bet you things would change.

New Year Means New Opportunities

As you look back over 2009, did you accomplish what you planned? As I sat with the January calendar in front of me, I felt overwhelmed. We have theory and sonatina deadlines on the 8th of January. Then if you want to play in the jazz recital, the deadline is the next week. Deadlines mean opportunities. We also have the deadline for pastorale on January 30. Most of you have not even begun to think about that.

Making composer bucks will be a little harder in 2010. If you do not work, you do not get paid---not even $1. I pay for the work you do. Be prepared next week. I am ready to roll into the new year. I hope you are.

Daylight Savings Time

With the time change, some of you will need a flashlight to come to piano. I guess we will live with it.

The theory test is this Saturday. If you are Karli, Kaci, Kaleb, Bryson, or Jonathan, please be ready and study very hard every day, especially the ear training.
I know you will all be glad to get that accomplished.
The Hymn Festival will then be on November 14th at Oakwood Baptist Church, I have had to split my students between the morning and the afternoon. I need to know your preferences this week.

Yesterday there was a very good All Boy's Recital. I was very proud of Jonathan, Jake, Ben, and Kaleb. They did a terrific job and represented our group very well. The next big even is the theory test on the 7th and then the Hymn Festival on November 14th. I am pleased with most of the progress and I wish you could hear the performances that I enjoy.

Lubbock has had cold weather

I hope you are practicing in order to stay warm. We had cold temperatures this weekend. I need each of you to be sure you are doing all you are supposed to do---your regular practice, theory, and preparation for the week. Some of you are improving very well, however, others have given me a few scary weeks of little or no work. Remember the fines I threatened? I certainly had rather pay you than fine you. Keep working. It pays off!

During the summer, I challenged students to practice 9 weeks collecting parent's signatures and receive $50 music bucks for their efforts. Some lost the papers. Some didn't make the race. Some will finish a little behind schedule. The good news is Addie, Kayelin, and Phoebe won the race on time and received payment. Yea!!!!!

Many of your questions should be answered by reading my policy letter. One important deadline is Sept 15. If you plan to be involved in any student affiliate activities this year, we have to pay your dues of $8.00. If you do not understand, contact me this week. The late fee will hurt us both.

Spring Piano Lessons End Friday

I am sure most of you are going to be glad when you can take a break from school and studies. I can tell you are all ready for some summertime fun. Me too!

Our recital will be Friday, May 22nd, at 6:30 p.m. at Jent's House of Music. The recital will be around 1 hour. I am asking that all of you be very respectful to the performers by staying quiet during the songs and not getting up to move around.
After the performances, we will have awards and refreshments. We must be out by 8:30 p.m.
If you have not given me your letter of summer intentions and your fall selection, I need it this week.

Time to spend your Piano Money

This is an exciting week, I hope. You get to spend the money you have saved this semester. I want you to buy pretty fast so we can still work on your music. Hello Students and Parents,
I am sending you this information on another computer because I have been unsuccessful at getting information posted on my home computer. Technology can be frustrating at times.
I know many of you are testing this week and I will try to be patient with your schedule. At this time of year, all of us are over worked and our schedules are packed to the max. We all have a big case of Spring Fever. I wrote a poem about my frustration over baseball games and that helped appease my mood. Maybe some of you could add a verse or two yourselves.
The Amarillo festival will be held on May 8th and 13 of my students will make that trip. I believe preparations are coming along very well. I am sending a letter to each family this week to ask about your summer lesson plans. I need to know as soon as possible so a schedule can be in order.
The performance contest ends on April 30th and I will wait until next week to declare a winner. Besure to bring your signatures to lessons this week and next.

I hope all of you had a wonderful Easter weekend. I did. I had my whole family here for Easter and it was my grandson, Justin's, birthday. We had a big egg hunt after church and lunch.

Texas Independence Day and News

Sorry to be a little late in this post. Last night I was working on the entries for Pastorale. That is coming along very well. I am proud of the work you are all doing and the results should be positive.

Today is Texas Independence Day and Dr. Seuss's birthday.

Pastorale information

I have the information we have waited for. Texas Tech Pastorale will be held Saturday, March 14th. This is the first weekend of Spring Break and I am afraid it will affect many of you. This was the only date available, other than the 21st, which is the last weekend of Spring Break. The deadline for entering the competetion is March 2nd. So, talk it over, and tell me at your lesson this week what your plans will be. This has been very confusing this year since we had a chairman resign and another took over.
Remember you have two songs to perform that day and hopefully, you will stick around until you get to play.

Yesterday was a wonderful day for Hannah and Kaleb. Both were awarded superior ratings at the Sonatina Festival. Congratulations!!!!!

The theory contest is also going well. The top contenders are:
1. Alecs (she's going great)
2. AJ (watch out for him)
3. Teresa (older sister of AJ)

All the rest of you are going to be so disappointed when you see what you have missed.

As I have looked at the participation in the theory site, I am so proud of some of you. You are working hard and learning a lot. I think there should be a reward for you. Starting tomorrow February 9th, I will be checking the progress of each one of you. Just before Spring Break, on March 12th,I will announce the winner of a contest. You will need to have high scores in the games you play and play on your level. The person who has the highest scores and number of games will win a prize.

Next Saturday, Kaleb and Hannah will be in the sonatina festival.
Although there has been much confusion over Pastorale this year, we are still working with the hopes that the chairman will not let us down. If he does, then we will have our own smaller contest after Spring Break. Sometimes things are out of my control.

January Comes to an End and A little Reminder

The best thing about a new year is looking forward to what is ahead. I am very proud of the practice most of you are doing on your music. It takes a good deal of responsibility to work on the songs every day, do your theory assignment in a book and on the website, prepare for various recitals and contests, do your school work, keep your parents and family in a good mood, and on and on. Are you doing all that?

The Jazz recital is at 10:30 Saturday morning at Jent's. Come on over and listen to some neat songs others have learned. Then next weekend, the theory test will happen. Oh dear, there is always something to do. Don't even think about saying, "I didn't have time to practice." We all have to schedule things and get them done.

Proof that you did at least one theory activity on the computer since January 21st.

I apologize for this late post. My internet was out most of the weekend.

I hope all of you are continuing to practice your songs faithfully. All the contests and activites during the spring can creep up on you if you get behind. I only have one entry for the Jazz and Pop Recital. That is Karli. We all seem to stay busy at one activity of another. Please use the theory website. It is a huge benefit for getting note reading and rhythm practice.

A New Year

Happy New Year Everybody!
By the time you read this, most of you have already attended one lesson for the new year. Tomorrow, January 9, is the deadline for the theory test to be given in February. I believe that the entries include: Daniella, Andrew, Rachael, Daniel, and Davey. Every one of the fall entrants earned a medal because all their scores were 90 and above. Those students were: Jonathan, Kaleb, Kaci, Karli, Hannah, Laura, and Katie.
Saturday there will also be two entries for the Sonatina Festival, February 14th. These are the students involved: Hannah and Kaleb.

The trivia question for next week is :
Who were the Russian composers called the "Mighty Handful"?
What were their ages?
Why did they organize a group?
Each part earns $1

Recital This Week

The week we have all been preparing for is just starting. Friday, December 19th at 6:30 p.m. will be the time of our Christmas recital. The evening will include many Christmas carols to get us in the spirit of things , plus other musical selections that have been prepared. Every year I give the time and date many times don't miss it.
I need to know as soon as possible if you are helping with refreshments. I know a few of you have told me your plans.

Last Wednesday and Thursday, students purchased items with their piano money. On Monday and Tuesday, the rest of the students can spend their money. I appreciate the hard work you have all done. You have been smart shoppers too.

This is the last blog entry for 2008. I want to thank you all for your hard work and I wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Lessons will resume on January 5, 2009.

Two Big Weeks

The next two weeks will be very busy for all of us. I am dreaming of a relaxing Christmas season---some day. You will be spending your money that has been earned this semester very soon. Wed. and Thursday students will buy this week, and Mon, and Tuesday students will buy next week.
I hope you are preparing your recital pieces at home. We will have a nice group of performances on the 19th.

Thanksgiving

I hope all of you are able to spend time with family and friends this week as we all count our blessings. I only have lessons on Monday and Tuesday this week. We have only 4 weeks until our recital on December 19th. It will be at Jent's House of Music at 6:30 p.m. Let me know what refreshments you could contribute.

I mentioned to a few of you last week about the Pastorale Festival at Texas Tech. It will be March 14th. I would like every one of you to prepare to participate. It helps learning very much when there is a specific goal in mind. Each student prepares 2 songs. One from the given list and a classical piece of your choice will be played.

Rest this week and then we must be well-prepared for performances on December 19th.

Saturday, 18 students participated in the Hymn festival at Oakwood Baptist Church.
Katie, Hannah, Laura, Trenton, Colton, Daniella, Tymber, Kenzi, Karli, Kaci, Bryson, Tyler, Graham, Tara, Davey, Daniel, Rachael, and Andrew. We had 15 Superior ratings and 3 Excellent ratings. I am proud of the hard work everyone did. Last week I recorded everyone as they played. I am please with the performances.

Next will be our recital on December 19th at 6:30 p.m.

Thanks to Jonathan, Hannah, Katie, Laura, Kaleb, Karli, and Kaci for participating in the theory test today. This is round one, and hopefully a very successful result will follow. The next theory test is in February, and about the same number will be involved.
Next Saturday, we will have the hymn festival. I will post the time you play on this blog by Monday, so please check back.

Election on the Brain

Even though I voted several weeks ago, the election is on my mind. I will be glad when Wednesday morning arrives and the election is over. As I thought of the election, I thought of a good music history question. Who wrote this song?

October brings more than just falling leaves

I love the Fall. I enjoy seeing all the trees prepare for the winter, and I always think of the harvesting of cotton and grain that goes on at this time of year. When we had an early freeze last week, it was not what most farmers wanted. Even though I seldom get to attend a football game, the fall brings the excitement of a pep rally and bands marching at half time. (That was always my favorite part of the game.) The question last week was too hard. So, this time it will be easier. Who was the Texas-born composer who wrote the song Solace? Give me his name and one of his better known compositions for $2.

Parents: You do not know how fortunate I am to hear your children as they prepare for the Hymn Festival. I entered many talented students this year and can't wait to see their results on the 15th of November.
There has been a real problem in the past two months with payments being paid on time. Please help me with this to assure that all fees and music tuition is paid in a timely fashion. This only applies to a very few of you. I appreciate the way you all help you children and encourage their practice. It makes lessons progress much better.

I am not really sure if you can pull up this video with the link I gave or not, but it is very cool. Not only would I like to play the boogie on the piano like the pianist, but I would really like to be able to jitterbug like they do.

Saturday, at 10:30, at Jent's Recital Hall, Jonathan, Kaleb, Colton, and Trenton will participate in the All Boy's recital. I will be there are I hope many of you will come to support them.

This weekend I attended the Library Book Sale and had a lot of fun buying books that I found and looking at lots and lots of others than were interesting. It reminded me of another activity that I enjoy--reading. Since all of you are good students, your question this week has to do with reading. I was reading about a composer whose birthday is this week. He had a father who was a famous musician too. He was supposed to have been a businessman instead of a musician, but his mother saw to it that he learned the violin. To receive $1, give me his name. To receive an additional $1, tell me one song he is famous for writing.

The month full of deadlines

I believe that we have only one more deadline during this month. That deadline is for entering the Hymn festival. If you have not made up your mind, tell me this week. The deadline for the Festival is October 25th because we play November 15th. This is one festival that involves many ages of students and is very enjoyable. You do not have to memorize your pieces, just play beautifully.
By the way, the question this week has to do with memorizing.
Who was the first pianist to play an entire recital by memory? It happened over 100 years ago. This answer is worth $2.

Also, last week Jonathan was the first student to earn one hundred dollars in piano bucks. He has $103 to be exact. That is amazing! I am proud of him.

Thanks to each of you who are participating in the various recitals and activities that I have suggested this fall. The theory website does seem to be helping some learn their notes better and to understand the concepts in the music. Last week, Marielle had the top score of 5,270 on Music Ace. Tyler also had an outstanding score of over 4000. That game is so fast.

The next deadline is on October 13th for the All Boys Recital. At the time, Kaleb and Jonathan will be participating in the recital.

I gave away $36 extra dollars in piano money last week. We learned about Fanny Crosby.

This week's question: Who perfected the use of the music staff?
(Hint: If you started piano with me, I told you this story and related it to the letter names of the clefs F and G. Some of you were very small but might remember and others will have to research this) It is worth $2 for half of the answer and $5 for the complete answer. Good Luck.
