Just a Few Thoughts from Last Week

Believe it or not, a lot happens at my house during the week.  People come and go and always have news and views to share.  I am quite sure that most of you were affected in some way by the bombings in Boston and the explosion in West, Texas.  Even when you do not know someone personally, you have friends who know someone.  It was a very sad week for our country and those events make others seem unimportant.

One thing that keeps me going are the success students have.  Sometimes, it is an athletic accomplishment, like Daniella, who broke the school record in pole vaulting, or a student of the month honor, like Bryson.  Sometimes, it is a student sharing their fun at trying out for the talent show.  Occasionally, students talk about playing the piano for a friend and receiving compliments.
Try very hard this week to look for all the good things happening around you.  You can share them with me.  I like that because you are important.

Someone asked about purchasing a piano stool.  I know where there is one to buy for $20.

Trivia  Follow up:
Most students had an opinion about whether the piano would be replaced by keyboards.  Even students with keyboards said they had rather play piano because of the dynamic capabilities, the power behind the instrument, and the fact that "great composers  and musicians" play piano instead of keyboards. I have both and love my piano the most. There is no comparison, even with the best of the electronic pianos, and the sound of a real string being hit by a real hammer and resonating with the instrument and the acoustic properties of the room it is in. There are some EXTREMELY expensive digital keyboards   that can duplicate the sound of an instrument very well that professionals will use when they can not possibly have access to a real instrument of the type they need (such as concerts in venues without harpsichords, celestas, pipe organs, etc.) but these can not duplicate the actions necessary to get that sound from a real instrument and no mater hard you try, that sound has been programmed in and is not being generated by the player. And there can be no way, no matter how weighted the keys are, that the response of these actions can be felt properly unless the student is dealing directly with an acoustic instruments. Pianists who already know how to do this and have experienced this will be able to deal with a digital piano- and of course appreciate them.  I just have a hard time with that.
